Chapter Fourteen
âHell, yeah!â I hooted as a small ball of flame hovered between my hands. âOkay, I think Iâve got this fire-making bit down. What have you got?â
Hazel and Quincy sat across from me, a low coffee table between us. We were in the library, a room that had to have been magicked. No matter how far you walked, the aisles stretched on and on, an endless array of books.
I was more a smart phone reader kind of girl, but to each her own.
Quincy closed his book on charm-making and held out his hands. A sphere of blue fire gathered above them, growing larger and larger until it was basketball sized. He tossed it up and down, let it land on one finger, and spun it with his hand, like he was a damn Harlem Globetrotter.
My own meagre flame sputtered and fizzled out. âShow off,â I muttered, giving him a wry smile.
He grinned. And tossed the fire ball at my head. It hovered above it, spun once more, and exploded into multi-colored confetti.
I sneezed, and Hazel laughed. âThe next party we have in your room is going to be lit.â
I brushed little bits of paper off my face. âYeah. Canât wait.â I made my voice deadpan, but a party didnât sound bad. As exciting as finally figuring out some magic was, my eyes were starting to ache and my head felt like it was filled with cotton balls from all this studying.
Could a girl study herself to death? Iâd never come close enough before for it to ever be an issue. But I was determined. Having Bane, Gareth, and Dante by my side was great and all, but I couldnât leave my defense up to others.
The first step in protecting myself was learning all the magic I could. And I was actually getting somewhere. Not as far as some peopleâI picked another bit of confetti from my hairâbut progress was being made.
Hazel snuggled deeper into her wide arm chair, pulling her blanket that had little arm sleeves sewn onto it up to her chin. âNot that Iâm complaining, but what brought on your midnight studying? Usually itâs just me and Quince at the library at this time of night.â
It wasnât midnight, only ten oâclock, but I got her meaning. I was no Hermione Granger.
Quincy nudged her.
âOh yeah.â Hazel nodded. âAnd what about your remedial magic classes? Are you done with those?â
Hazel must be a mind reader, or else Quincy could project his thoughts. It was the only explanation for their weird communication style. But theyâd been friends since the third grade. A bit of mind-reading was part and parcel of such a long-lasting friendship.
âNo, theyâre not done.â When Iâd arrived at the gym after dinner, all Iâd been greeted with had been a note. Gareth had some mysterious business to take care of and couldnât work with me tonight.
I liked to think he was still too sore from the unintentional ass-kicking Iâd given him and Bane yesterday. Iâd like to think it, but it probably wasnât true.
